My work focuses on animal representation, unease with the human animal, as well as animal signs and stand-ins. Mining Art History, Flemish still life, nature illustration, pet culture, hunting kitsch and the like, I use the filters of animal studies and post-humanities, digging in with both reverence and critique. I use the language of all of this, along with that of (mostly) painting and drawing, to question our relationship to animals and erode the comfortable boundaries between “us” and “them,” the wild and the domestic, the humorous and the horrific, the acceptable and the absurd. In life-scale oil paintings animal protagonists stare back at the viewer in an uneasy gaze, poking the tipping point where gruesome and gorgeous teeter, where lines between human and animal are obscured, and the nature/culture binary is washed away.
